Baborak's brilliant horn festival
The programming department at the DFP is certainly improving. The brilliant horn festival and concert of 18 May was entitled "The Horn and the Hunt". Featuring 3 superb hornists (past and present), we had Barry Tuckwell as conductor with star hornist Radek Baborak (of the Berlin PO fame) and Lin Jiang (from the MPO) perform various classical pieces by Mozart, Rosetti and Haydn which feature hunting horn sounds. The concert opened with Mozart's little Symphony No 32. It prefaced Rosetti's Horn Concerto and then that Italian composer's Symphony No 18 (The Hunt). Haydn's Concerto for 2 horns and orchestra in E flat and his Symphony No 73 (The Hunt) wrapped up the concert. I think Baborak is a very fine soloist and we have never heard such smooth and liquid tones for a solo or an orchestral horn before in our 16 years of the DFP. The 2 soloists and conductor kindly consented to do autographs in a post-concert meet the artist session. Simply and brilliantly delightful.

I think Baborak's performance with MPO is the best so far in DFP.
