Bavouzet's Beethoven day out
Concert programming has improved at the DFP this season. Debut conductor Alexander Shelley gave us a concert of inspired selection by programming Hubert Parry's Elegy for Brahms prefacing Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto in C minor Op 37 - played magnificently this time by rising French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.
On his prior visit, Bavouzet appeared to be finding his feet in a shaky interpretation of the evergreen Schumann Piano Concerto. However with an additional couple of years of the world concert circuit and a few fine CD releases on Chandos (like the Gabriel Pierne Piano Concerto), this has given him more musical depth as well as sure confidence that was lacking on his previous debut visit.
This was heroic Beethoven interpretation at its best, with Bavouzet providing pellucid trills especially in the first movement. The second movement provided a temporary meditation, before we were treated to a cheeky and joyous interpretation for the third movement.
After the interval, we were entertained to a mature interpretation of Brahms' Second Symphony by conductor Alexander Shelley. The MPO sounded well in his confident control and we certainly will hear greater things of this conductor in years to come.
