A Don Juan to savour

11 June 2011 saw Lidia Baich's return to the DFP, KL with yet another virtuoso offering in the shape of Bruch's First Violin Concerto. Fabio Luisi (previous general music director of the Staastkapelle Dresden) was scheduled to conduct the concert but was indisposed and replaced by Julian Kuerti (son of the pianist Anton).

The most highly satisfying performance was that of Richard Strauss' Don Juan - which was given an interpretation of ardour and passion. For once, the MPO horns (which are crucial in Don Juan) did not disappoint with any obvious cracked notes and fudged entries.

Baich's previous performance in KL was with Lorin Maazel in the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. As with her previous performance in KL, there were shortcomings in her technique. This is surprising as she studied with such a notable pedagogue (Prof. Boris Kuschnir). The technical shortcomings were notable in the swifter portions of the Bruch 1st and 3rd movements. Her best moments came in the lyrical 2nd movement.

The Beethoven Eroica that followed after the interval was a good interpretation but I believe that Kuerti has yet to fully form his ideas of this massive masterpiece. One of the very best performances at DFP of the piece remains in the memory and this was of the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin under previous principal conductor Ingo Metzmacher.
